We all fondly remember the fairytales of our childhood. Sleeping Beauty, Princess and the Pea, but one such tale comes to mind as I think about what is happening to America these days. It is the tale of Rip Van Winkle. Like Rip Van Winkle, many American's are in a deep sleep, a sleep that has gone on far too long.
It was 1819 when Washington Irving wrote the tale of a man who fell asleep after drinking and playing with dwarves in the woods. Twenty years later he awakens only to find that the world he once knew had changed: his beloved wife had died, his daughter was grown and married, the American Revolutionary War had already been fought and King George was no longer the ruler, America was now their own. What will American's find when they awaken?
They will find the life they knew no longer exists. The freedom and liberties they once knew no longer exist as they slipped away while they snored. It was the only noise they knew how to make during the battle for survival.
What changes will they find? The list is extensive: Americans have become an outcast or alien in their our homeland. They will be surprised to find the new way we conduct employment practices, as they must now have to show proof they were born here. They will be denied employment because they do not speak Spanish or another language. Immigrants are discouraged to learn English as we give them everything in their language now. We now have over 186 languages spoken in America, yet no one is encouraged to learn English. Isn't the language of America English? Those not born here are encouraged to be disrespectful of American Culture, yet all Americans must be politically correct and respect their culture and way of life. They will find that they can no longer discipline their children if they are bad, or even tell their child "no" for any reason, for if they do, they could be brought up on charges of abuse, or neglect and possibly arrested. They will find they have no say in their child's healthcare or future, because the government has that control now. Religious beliefs have changed too. The Catholic Church is no longer able to ring its bells because it offends many, while the Muslin Community is allowed to broadcast their call to Allah in Arabic over the loud speakers in many cities. Our legal system has faltered in their judicial responsibilities. We now have judges who are more interested in their own interpretation of our constitutional laws rather than upholding what the founding fathers intentions were. Child protective services can take your child without due process of law, all in the name of saving a child, while law enforcement officials must jump through hoops in order to gain a search warrant on a drug dealer, murderer or a terrorist. Oh yeah, and now if a major corporation wishes to build on your property, you have no say in the matter, for they will just make it worth while to your local politicians and your land will be given to them without question.
Americans can no longer get student loans or grants for higher education because they were born here, yet their tax dollars are free for the taking to anyone who comes here from another country. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness no longer exists for any American Citizen.
Is it the fault of our politicians for being greedy in how they govern over the country, or is it the people who allowed this to happen? Who allowed our country to diminish in such a way it now seems irreversible to regain what we have lost. Politicians who once came into power for the greater good, fell victim to those who had power and greed in their hearts and only thought of themselves rather than the good of the nation.
Our Forefathers came to this country, the melting pot and learned the language, adapted and kept their identity at home and united as a group. Why can't these new immigrants do the same and respect our way of life. When will America wake up? When is it politically correct to allow our language, the English Language, to be considered as the second language of our country? To have our laws used against us so others have the power of our culture and way of life?
Like Rip Van Winkle, have we become a people who are inexplicably unaware of current events or changes in the social issues which are affecting our lives? The alarms are going off, the alarm of freedom crying out for our attention. These Alarms go off, yet we keep hitting the snooze button: Why? It's time for AMERICA TO WAKE UP!
