It takes a very special person to be a United States Marine, anyone can choose to become a Marine, but not many are born to be one. Major Doug Zembiec was one of those chosen few who were born to be a Marine.
It is with a heavy heart that I write this post and pass on the news that we have lost not only a patriot but a true American Hero. Major Douglas Zembiec, USMC gave the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq yesterday and my personal condolences go out to his wife Pam and beautiful daughter Fallyn, along with his Parents and family.
When I heard the news we had lost a brother, I picked up my bible for inspiration and the passage that was revealed was as if God directed me to this passage on purpose - for this truly describes Major Zembiec.
“if anyone sees his brother in need but has no pity on him,
how can the love of God be in him?
Let us love not with words or tongue
but with actions and in truth.”
John 3:17,18
He did not enter Iraq just because he was under orders to go there. This was his fourth tour of duty. He went back because he believed in helping to aid his fellow human beings with his “actions and truth”. His love of God, Country and Corps allowed him to lead his fellow Marines into battle many times and survived each with minor wounds. In April 2007, he returned to Iraq once again with one thing in mind, to finish the job he started, to help aid his fellow human beings in a battle for survival and freedom. Freedom is not free and there is always a price to be paid for such freedom. Major Zembiec knew the price of freedom, because the essence of freedom flowed through his veins. He was a Marine through and through.
His story is one that Hollywood will eventually write about of heroism, selflessness, compassion and tragedy. As the Commanding Officer of Echo Company in the Battle for Fallujah he led his men to victory many times over. His compassion for his brothers went beyond the norm as he inspired his Marines to continue to fight and over come adversity on the battlefield. His compassion didn’t just stop there. His leadership exemplified the motto of the Marine Corps, Semper Fidelis, Always Faithful. He was an old soul and believed that an officer should shed a tear for his fallen warriors and because of that compassion he took the time to write a personal note of bravery, heroism and purpose of their sacrifice to the families of his Marines. There are officers and then there are officers in the military. Major Zembiec was a special officer who lead by example of what leadership truly should be and because of that he earned the respect and admiration of each and every one of his Marines.
Although we mourn the loss of a brother, we celebrate his life as a Marine because that’s what he would have wanted us to do. But today, America lost a Hero

A true warrior for this Country, for Her people and for his family. May God Bless, hold and comfort those who knew and loved him and may God raise up more like him for our future struggles! There is never 'just a Marine'. The depth of their commitment denies 'just' but he was all that and more. Hang tough!
